Live music on the island runs at three levels. The resorts do covers, tributes and cabaret every night of the week, aimed at an audience that is here for a fortnight, and the standard is a good deal higher than the format suggests.

Santa Cruz has a landmark concert hall on the seafront with a full classical and touring programme, and the capital's bars carry jazz and Latin nights. The third level is the island's own: parranda, the Canarian folk tradition of timple, guitar and voice, which turns up unannounced in northern bars and at village fiestas and is the one worth stumbling into.
