Getting Around Tenerife
Two airports, a good island bus network, ferries to the western islands, and a car for everything else.
Tenerife has two airports and they are an hour apart. Tenerife South takes almost all the holiday traffic and sits twenty to thirty minutes from the southern resorts. Tenerife North, above La Laguna, handles inter-island flights and mainland routes and is the one to use for the north of the island.
The public bus network is better than most islands manage and reaches the villages, the crater and both airports, with a rechargeable travel card that makes it cheap. What it does not do is run often enough to build a day around in the quieter corners. For the mountain roads, the northern wine villages and the far west, a car is the difference between seeing the island and seeing the resort.
