Teide and its crater, the laurel forest of Anaga, two UNESCO listings, and the theme parks of the south coast.
The island's headline sight is a volcano. Teide is the highest mountain in Spain at 3,715 metres, and the national park around it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a crater floor of lava fields and rock formations at 2,000 metres, reached by road from four directions and by cable car from the south side.
The second UNESCO listing is a town. San Cristobal de La Laguna, the island's old capital, was laid out on a grid in the fifteenth century and became the template for colonial cities across the Americas. Beyond those two, the range is unusually wide for an island this size: laurel forest in Anaga, dragon trees at Icod, a black-sand coast, and the largest theme parks in the Canaries.
