Wineries and Wine Tasting in Tenerife
Tenerife makes wine that is genuinely unlike anywhere else, for a reason that is easy to state and hard to overstate: phylloxera never arrived, so the vines are ungrafted and some are very old. The grapes are the island's own, Listan Negro and Listan Blanco chief among them, grown on black volcanic soil between the coast and 1,600 metres.
Five protected regions cover the island and the concentration is in the north, in the Orotava valley and above Tacoronte, where the vines are trained in a low braided cordon found nowhere else. Bodegas take visitors for tastings, and there is an island wine museum in a northern manor house that is the best place to start.
